Ocean Science
The Bahamas’ clear, vibrant waters are not just a defining feature of our landscape and livelihoods—they are a key part of global ocean systems. Despite its overwhelming importance to our economy, ecology and well being, ocean science remains the most under explored subject in our national curriculum. The BMHNS is committed to changing that through its Ocean Science Education Platform, which aims to connect Bahamians, especially youth, with the science of our oceans and their vital role in global climate systems.
Our platform, developed in collaboration with leading oceanographic institutions such as Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Perry Marine Institute, and NOAA, focuses on educating the public about the oceans around us and the broader world’s oceans. This platform will serve as a reliable repository of the latest ocean science research, including studies on marine life, food sources, and potential medical discoveries, bringing these complex topics into accessible, everyday language.
A particular focus of our education efforts will be on the intersection of ocean science, hurricanes, and climate change—critical issues for the Bahamas as rising ocean temperatures lead to more intense and frequent storms. Through our programs, we aim to prepare the next generation of Bahamians to understand, adapt to, and protect their ocean environment, while also positioning the Bahamas as a global leader in ocean science education.
